Our Story & Who We Are

We've been helping businesses navigate complex legal waters since day one, and honestly, we wouldn't have it any other way.

How We Got Here

Every firm has a beginning, and ours started with three lawyers who got tired of the same old stuffy approach to corporate law. We figured there had to be a better way to serve businesses without all the unnecessary complications.

2008

The Beginning

Started in a small office on King Street with just three partners and a shared vision. We wanted to build something different - a firm that actually gets what businesses need without the pretense. Those first few years taught us more than any law school ever could.

Growing Pains

Moved to Bay Street after landing some major clients in tech and manufacturing. Grew our team to 15 lawyers and realized we needed better systems. Also learned that growth isn't always smooth - had to turn down work for the first time, which was weird but necessary.

Finding Our Groove

Launched our specialized M&A practice and won our first major commercial litigation case that made headlines. That year really put us on the map. We also started mentoring younger lawyers the way we wished someone had mentored us - with honesty and real-world advice.

Adapting & Thriving

Expanded our employment law division after seeing how much our clients struggled with post-pandemic workplace issues. Added six new partners who brought fresh perspectives. Also upgraded our entire tech stack because let's face it, legal work doesn't have to feel stuck in 1995.

Where We Stand

Now we're 32 lawyers strong, handling everything from cross-border M&A deals to complex IP disputes. We've kept what made us different from the start - straight talk, practical solutions, and actually caring about outcomes. Plus we finally got that corner office view everyone jokes about.

Been practicing corporate law for 22 years and still gets excited about a well-drafted shareholder agreement. She handles our biggest M&A deals and somehow makes securities compliance interesting. MBA from Rotman, calls of duty after work.

Marcus Rodriguez
Marcus Rodriguez

Founding Partner, Litigation

Trial lawyer who's won cases that others said were unwinnable. Spent 5 years at a big Bay Street firm before joining us in 2008. He's the guy you want when things go sideways. Also makes the best coffee in the office, not that it's relevant.

Jennifer Wu
Jennifer Wu

Partner, Employment Law

Joined us in 2019 after getting tired of how other firms handled workplace disputes. She gets the people side of employment law, which matters more than you'd think. Certified mediator who actually prefers finding solutions over fighting in court.

Founding Partner, Contract Law

Contract negotiation is his thing - he's saved clients millions by catching stuff others missed. Started his career in-house at a tech company, so he understands business reality. Plays chess competitively, which explains his strategic thinking.

Amanda Kowalski

Partner, Intellectual Property

Patent law specialist who came from the tech world herself - used to be an engineer before law school. She speaks both languages, which is rare and incredibly useful when you're dealing with IP protection for innovative products or services.

Thomas Beaumont

Partner, Corporate Governance

Corporate governance and compliance expert who makes boring regulatory stuff somehow manageable. Former securities lawyer who joined us in 2020. He's detail-oriented in a way that actually helps clients sleep better at night knowing they're covered.

What Actually Drives Us

These aren't just words on a wall. They're the principles we live by every day.

Legal jargon has its place, but that place isn't every conversation. We explain things in plain English because our job is to help you make informed decisions, not to impress you with fancy terminology. You'll always know where you stand, what your options are, and what things actually cost.

Theory is great for law school. In practice, you need solutions that work in the real world. We've been around long enough to know that perfect legal solutions sometimes create business problems. Our advice considers both the legal landscape and your actual business needs.

Sometimes the best legal advice is "don't do that." We'll tell you when litigation isn't worth it, when a settlement makes more sense, or when you're overthinking something. Sure, we could rack up more billable hours, but that's not how we operate. Your trust matters more than any single invoice.

Business moves fast, and legal support shouldn't be the bottleneck. We respond quickly - not because we're glued to our phones, but because we staff appropriately and use tech that actually helps. If you need an answer, you'll get one within 24 hours, usually much faster.

We're not transaction-focused - we're relationship-focused. Some of our clients have been with us since 2008, through good times and rough patches. That's because we invest in understanding your business, your industry, and your goals. We're in this for the long haul.

Laws change, business evolves, and we keep learning. Our lawyers attend specialized training, we invest in better systems, and we regularly review our processes. What worked in 2008 doesn't cut it in 2025. We adapt because standing still in this profession means falling behind.

Recognition & Awards

We don't do this work for the trophies, but it's nice when others notice the effort.
